Baseball – State Champions!
Congratulations to the 2016 UMS-Wright 4A Baseball State Champions! The Bulldogs finished the season with a 33 – 9 record, defeating Oneonta in the state baseball finals in May. This victory secured UMS-Wright’s 9th State Baseball Championship title in school history.
Finding the right words was hard for Coach Raley as he tried to describe the 2016 baseball season. Winning the 4A State Championship was a fitting end for this group of boys and coaches. The Bulldogs say farewell and godspeed to six Seniors – Grant Barber, Chauncey Callier, Garrett Hollinghead, McKee Steele, Johnathan Thornton, and Henry Van Haneghan. They are a special group and will certainly be missed.
Four UMS-Wright players were selected for the 4A All-State First Team, and junior Tanner Allen was awarded the 2016 4A Player of the Year. Four players were also selected to the Coastal Alabama All-Region First Team, and Grant Barber was named the 2016 Coastal Alabama Player of the Year. Samuel Plash was chosen for the Coastal Alabama All-Region Second Team.
We have quite a few of the championship team members who played major roles in the 2016 championship season returning in 2017. The Bulldogs will play another tough schedule to prepare for another run at the state championship. We hope to see you at Radcliff Field next spring!
