Meet the coach
Coach Michael Napp is entering his third season as head coach of the Bulldog basketball program. A 1996 graduate of UMS-Wright, Coach Napp began his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant under Coach Kemper Todd in 2000. He also spent a season as an assistant under Coach Anthony Clark in 2003-2004. Coach Napp left UMS-Wright to become the head coach at Northeast Jones High School in Laurel, MS. In his two seasons there, the Tigers saw tremendous success and advanced to the South State semifinals in 2006. For the next eight seasons, Coach Napp was the head coach at Chelsea High School in the Birmingham metro area. He left Chelsea with the second most wins for a coach in program history while leading the Hornets to school records in season wins and their only postseason victory in the last 28 years. In his first two seasons back at UMS-Wright, the Bulldogs made the playoffs both years advancing to the subregional round. Coach Napp teaches high school Engineering and study hall classes at UMS-Wright. He and his wife Susanne have been married for 16 years, and they have four children – Davis (1st Grade), Bryce (K5), Mary Carolyn (K4) and Cameron (2 years old).
After back to back playoff appearances, the 2016-17 Bulldogs are aiming for an area championship and a deep playoff run. With 13 returning players from last season’s area tournament roster, this season’s squad will be an experienced and battle-tested group. November and December will feature several home games against solid competition and a trip to LaPlace, LA for the St. Charles Catholic Tournament. UMS-Wright will once again host a 16 team, 3-day tournament featuring our mens and womens teams and a field of teams from Birmingham, the Mississippi gulf coast, and Louisiana. In January, the Bulldogs will face 4A Area 1 opponents Thomasville and Satsuma in their quest for the program’s 14th area title. Several returning players are expected to have exciting seasons. Senior Thomas Barnett (2015 team MVP, 2-year letterman) was selected as the team Captain after leading the team through a rigorous and successful summer season and fall workouts. Junior Ryan McIlwain (2015 team MVP, 2-year letterman) could eclipse the 1,000 point mark, and freshman Trey Bonham takes over at point guard.
