Meet the Coach
Coach Terry Canova is beginning his season as head coach for the Lady Bulldog Basketball Program, and 25th overall in his career. Over the past ten seasons the Lady Bulldogs have compiled a 238-83 overall record, averaged 24 wins a year, won eight straight area championships, advanced to six straight regional finals, and two straight Final Fours. Since Canova’s arrival UMS-Wright has been consistently considered one of the top programs throughout the Gulf South Region. Read more...
The 2016 - 2017 Lady Bulldog Basketball Team continues to be one of the Elite Girls Basketball Programs in the State of Alabama. UMS-Wright and only two other Alabama schools in history have six straight Regional Final appearances. The Lady Bulldogs also reached the 4A Final Four for the second consecutive season last year, capping off an eighth straight Area 1 – 4A Championship season and a 27-7 overall record.
After graduating four senior starters, Lady Bulldog Basketball fans should see fresh faces on the hardwood this season. While the team will be relatively inexperienced, rebuilding is not a term Coach Canova and his staff intend on using. “It’s a head coach’s job to not only coach his current team, but also continue to develop the future. Fielding a successful team is my responsibility every year, not just when I have an experienced team. We aren’t going to use the word rebuild, that’s a cop-out. Our program is already built. We’ve got to coach up our young players and find a way to win games and gain experience at the same time.” This season, the only returning starter for the Lady Bulldogs is Senior Sarah Frances Phillips, who led the team in three pointers last year. She will be joined by seniors Abigail McPhillips and Mary Ellis Boyd. Rounding out the roster are three juniors and three sophomores.
"We have a lot of inexperienced players who will be asked to produce immediately. But our core values and expectations will be the same as always - we want to be tough and stingy on the defensive end of the floor and efficient on the offensive side of the ball. We have better competition at every position than we’ve ever had in my ten seasons at UMS-Wright,” said Coach Canova. “I think through the daily competition, you’ll see a bigger improvement curve than we’ve had in the past.”
We hope to see all of you in the stands this season!
