Meet the Head Coach

Head Coach Vicky Bedsole returns for her fifth season to lead the Bulldog swimmers and divers this year.  Coach Bedsole is a native of Atlanta, Georgia.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Sewanee: The University of the South where she was a member of the swim team for four years.  This is Coach Bedsole’s second year as a full faculty member at UMS-Wright where she serves as the mentor/facilitator for the seventh grade French and Spanish Middlebury Interactive Language Program. She is also pursuing her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of South Alabama. Coach Bedsole and her husband Rusty (UMS Class of 1981) have a son, Brink, in the freshamn class at UMS-Wright. Their daughter, Charlotte, is a graduate of the 2016 class.

Season RECAP

After a winning regular season with a very “young” team and a 2nd place finish at AHSAA South Sectionals for the girls, the state qualifiers travelled to Auburn University for the 2016 AHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championship Meet.  To say that the competition at Auburn that weekend was a step above what we are used to during the regular season would be an understatement.  The icing on the cake was that every single swimmer and diver performed at a personal best for the season.

Led by Paige Madden's outstanding and inspiring wins in both individual events, the girls team pulled out a strong 4th place finish!  To take a team of six swimmers and two divers to compete in a 12-event competition and finish like they did was quite an accomplishment for THEM. The boys competition was equally as intense, and the five boys were impressive in their two relays, all of them competing at State for the first time!

While only the top eight swimmers make it to finals, it should be noted that in prelims Campbell Ladd placed 10th in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, and Jake Lee placed 11th in the 100 Freestyle with a PR as well as 20th in the 50 Freestyle.

Middle school diver, Blakeslee Elliott brought home a 1st place State Champ title for the Bulldogs!

UMS-Wright still holds more state records than any school in the state of Alabama. To be an 11-time State Champion and hold five state records at the end of six years (you can only swim 2 individual events each year) is an enormous feat for Paige and a tribute to her dedication and persistent hard work. The recognition that UMS-Wright received because of her success is palpable at the State Meet.  We will miss her!!
